Understanding Effective Ad Copy on SERPs
In today’s digital landscape, the importance of crafting compelling ad copy cannot be overstated. It serves as the first contact point for potential clients before they reach a landing page. Effective ad copy not only attracts clicks but also sets the tone for the subsequent user experience. As a digital marketer, I strive to refine my skills continually, and dissecting existing ad copies is an excellent method to sharpen my understanding of what works and what doesn’t.
Recently, I conducted a focused search for “Lewisville family law firm,” as I am currently based in Dallas, Texas, with Lewisville being a nearby suburb. This search revealed the top three ads on the search engine results page (SERP), which I believe can provide valuable insights into effective ad copy strategies.
Assessing the Top Three Ads
#1 – Jim Ross Law
Display URL: This advertisement utilizes capital letters in its display URL, significantly enhancing readability. The inclusion of relevant keywords coupled with bold text that Google applies to prominent terms in the search query aids in drawing the viewer’s attention. While dashes in the URL can sometimes have an ambiguous impact on user interpretation, the clarity achieved through capitalization is commendable.
Extensions: The sitelinks provided in the ad are adequate yet underwhelming. While options like ‘Testimonials’ may cultivate a sense of trust, they primarily serve as navigation points rather than enhancing user experience. Given the diverse specializations within family law, utilizing specific legal services as sitelinks would have been a more strategic choice.
Ad Copy: The headline “Family Law Firm” is straightforward and immediately informative. The promise of being “Focused on You and Your Needs” conveys a customer-centric approach, implying that their attorneys are both attentive and compassionate. The capitalization underscores the significance of the message, especially in a domain where clients often feel vulnerable. Adding “20+ Years of Experience” adds credibility, suggesting comprehensive knowledge and capability in unexpected situations. The call to action, “Call Us Today!”, is assertive and effectively encourages potential clients to take immediate action.
Weakness: Despite the strengths of this ad, it lacks geographical specificity. The law firm is located in Arlington, Texas, but this crucial detail is omitted. Including Lewisville in the copy would enhance relevance and clarity, improving the ad’s effectiveness.
Interesting Notes: This advertisement reflects previous successes, as evidenced by the domain being part of an extended headline, indicating established authority. While it doesn’t explicitly address cost-related concerns or other financial aspects, understanding their list of negative keywords could reveal strategic insights.
#2 – The Jimenez Law Firm
Display URL: The domain www.thejimenezlawfirm.com is relatively lengthy on its own, limiting the additional information that can be communicated. A simple extension of “/Family” or “/FamilyLaw” could have enhanced clarity and relevance.
Extensions: This ad incorporates both Location and Click-to-Call extensions, which are practical features that enhance user interaction. While sitelinks and Call-Out Extensions may exist, Google’s algorithms tend to prioritize distinctiveness in appearance to boost overall click-through rates (CTR).
Ad Copy: Featuring “Lewisville” and “Divorce Lawyer” in the headline effectively captures a specific audience segment. Ending Description Line 1 with punctuation provides the opportunity for an extended headline— a clever use of space. The phrase “Aggressive Representation” stands out, indicating a strong commitment to client advocacy. However, the second description, “Call today. Talk to an Attorney,” falters by presenting two calls to action in one line, ultimately diluting its effectiveness.
Weakness: Absent the compelling phrase “Aggressive Representation,” this ad would significantly lack impact. Two calls to action on the second description exhibit a lack of meticulousness in ad copy crafting. The failure to capitalize on the display URL opportunities alongside a competent understanding of user location can hinder the ad’s performance.
Interesting Notes: The company’s location in Lewisville raises questions about ad targeting for searches from other cities. Analyzing this could yield insights into their broader marketing strategy.
#3 – North Dallas Family Law
Display URL: The display URL maximizes the character space available by integrating additional keywords; capitalization further enhances readability.
Extensions: While this ad includes sitelinks, they appear to be basic navigational labels from the website rather than strategically designed to enhance user engagement. A more tailored approach would likely yield better conversion rates.
Ad Copy: The inclusion of “Family Divorce Lawyers” in the headline is suitable, yet the follow-up phrase “Family Lawyer For Real Results” lacks strength, failing to command confidence as effectively as “Aggressive Representation” from the previous ad. “Hire Experience and Rest Assured” creates confusion; it doesn’t communicate a clear benefit or actionable directive, which is essential in ad copy.
Weakness: The ad omission of “Lewisville” in a domain highlighting “North Dallas” is a missed opportunity for geographical relevance. Given the ineffectiveness of Description Line 2, which obscures the message, it is unlikely that this ad will maintain its top-tier status for long.
Interesting Notes: The relative mediocrity of their sitelinks suggests that other extensions might provide better engagement. Ongoing monitoring will likely reveal a decline in Quality Score alongside CTR if improvements are not made.
Key Takeaways from Analysis
In conclusion, while the second ad may excel in some areas with powerful messaging, the first ad demonstrates a more balanced and clear approach throughout. Attention to detail in every element of ad copy can significantly impact performance, highlighting the need for thorough consideration during the design phase. Additionally, identifying effective messages from various industries will be beneficial in refining the overall advertising strategy and crafting impactful ad copy.
